NSW: Muslim group to launch court action over prayer centre

A Muslim leader who had his application for a prayer centre in north-west Sydney rejectedby the local council will take his fight to court.

The NSW Democrats say they'll support an application by ABBAS ALY to the NSW Land andEnvironment Court to have the centre built.

Baulkham Hills Shire Council last week voted 10-2 to reject an application for a Muslimprayer centre on the grounds it's not in the community interest, not compatible with thearea and not in accordance with the shared beliefs of the community.

The refusal has sparked allegations of racism.

Mayor JOHN GRIFFITHS says the decision was also based on a genuine fear by residentsof possible repercussions.

The council received 5,000 letters demanding it oppose the building in Annangrove Road.

Mr ALY met with Baulkham Hills councillor MARGARET VAN DE WEG, who voted in favourof the centre, and Democrats candidate JAMES LANTRY.
