Vic: Police and government at odds over bans
Victoria police are incensed at government claims they would endanger public safety
by giving drink-drivers and vandals a free rein when union work bans escalate.
Police Association secretary PAUL MULLETT is demanding an apology from Police Minister
ANDRE HAERMEYER.
Mr HAERMEYER was reported yesterday as saying an imminent ban on police patrols would
give the green light to crime.
The slanging match comes as both parties are due to report on the progress of talks
in the pay dispute before the Australian Industrial Relations Commission at 10am (AEST)
tomorrow.
Senior Sergeant MULLETT says Mr HAERMEYER'S suggestion is outrageous and insulting.
But Mr HAERMEYER is refusing to back away from his claim, and has asked police to consider
the potential consequences of their action.
