Qld: Cyclone crosses the coast
A tropical cyclone has crossed the far north Queensland coast and is heading west across
Cape York Peninsula.
Cyclone FRITZ, the lowest rated at category one, formed yesterday and hit land at Princess
Charlotte Bay.
The weather bureau says it expects the cyclone to move across Cape York Peninsula during
the day and possibly redevelop in the Gulf of Carpentaria tomorrow.
The cyclone has maximum winds gusts of 100 km/h and a cyclone warning has been issued
for coastal and island communities between Lockhart River and Cape Flattery.
A Cyclone Watch is current for Gulf of Carpentaria coastal and island communities from
Karumba westward to the Northern Territory Border.
The bureau says heavy rain and local flooding is expected over the Peninsula and northern
tropical coast.
